There is no single boating license that is valid in every state. Each state has its own requirements for boaters, which may include taking a boating safety course and passing a written exam. Some states also have age restrictions for operating certain types of boats.
Alabama requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or less without supervision. Those under 16 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 10 horsepower.
Alaska requirements:
No boating license is required, but boaters must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Arizona requirements:
Must be at least 10 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 10 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 10 horsepower.
Arkansas requirements:
Must be at least 14 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 15 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 15 horsepower.
California requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 15 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Colorado requirements:
Must be at least 14 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Connecticut requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 40 horsepower.
Delaware requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 40 horsepower.
Florida requirements:
Must be at least 14 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 30 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 30 horsepower.
Georgia requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 30 horsepower without supervision. Those under 16 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 30 horsepower.
Hawaii requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 15 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Idaho requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 16 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Illinois requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Indiana requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Iowa requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Kansas requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Kentucky requirements:

Louisiana requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 40 horsepower.
Maine requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 40 horsepower.
Maryland requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 40 horsepower.
Massachusetts requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 10 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 10 horsepower.
Michigan requirements:
Must be at least 12 years old to operate a boat with an engine of less than 25 horsepower without supervision. Those under 18 years old must have completed an approved boating safety course to operate a boat with an engine of more than 25 horsepower.
Minnesota requirements:
